Fjord Fuzz Fenris
It’s made by Fjord Fuzz, and it’s aptly named Fenris.
To quickly brush up your Norse mythology, Fenris is a wolf that would not stop growing. The gods were so terrified of him, they brought him to Asgard and chained him in a cave. Come Ragnarök, he will free himself and devour Odin.
This thing is a beast. There is nothing subtle to be found here. It is a fuzz, and it does not come with a clean blend. Low end loss is not a problem here. You can dial in starved sounds that lack certain frequency parts, and there are brighter sounds with lack of bass, sure. But you can also dial in more bottom end than your speakers will enjoy.
What caught my eye about this pedal was that Fjord Fuzz says they based it on a Super Fuzz circuit, but replaced the preamp bit with that of “The good old Tape Echo Machine”. I was hunting for a Chase Tone Secret Preamp at that point and was experimenting with fuzz pedals for synth applications, so I thought it might be a nice addition and pulled the trigger.
The controls on this thing are anything but intuitive. Instead of words, or single letters, they used symbols.
“dB” is volume and the raygun is gain. This is the easy bit.
The Halfmoon and the inverted heart symbols control a notch filter, halfmoon does the mix, inverted heart the frequency. Then there’s a BIAS for the octave marked with a triangle, and finally, there is a shroom that will control the BIAS Gate.
Does it sound like a gated octave fuzz? No, not really. At least not in the classical sense.
Does it sound like a beefed up Super Fuzz? Occasionally, but also, not really.
It sounds, plays and feels like a wild animal that is not exactly “hard to tame”. It is impossible to tame.
This thing is feral. You can just ride along and hope for the best.
It clearly is a bass capable fuzz, if not a bass fuzz. But it excels at getting you a dirt sound that is above and beyond, and sounds a little bit kaputt, but with a massive low end if you so desire.
I could see some use in that if you’re playing contemporary doom or sludge and already have a drive sound and a heavy drive sound, but need something extra for the really hard parts.
This is not for the faint of heart. This is for those that want a second fuzz, because their Big Muff variant is too soft.
